Mental State: Confident

Assured in YOU?

Confidence is defined as a feeling of self-assurance arising from one’s appreciation of one’s own abilities or qualities. Today we will be talking about how our definition of this mental state and the characteristics we attribute to it can affect us or make us feel less than, It is my hope that at the end of this post we all leave here with the ability to see strength and confidence within ourselves.

When many of us hear the word “confident” we often associate it with a sense of boisterous nonchalance, a commanding air and a brashness. I was guilty of this as well, I was of the belief that confidence was reserved for people with certain qualities, that one had to look a certain way, be from a certain background or posess certain qualities.

My flawed logic often led me to believe someone like me could never be confident, an awkward,timid creature standing at a measly 5’7? It just seemed so unlikely.

With time and growth, I began to realize confidence was not a set of characteristics, and confidence did not necessarily mean commanding attention. It became known to me that confidence had nothing to do with what other people thought or felt about you, but what you thought and felt about yourself and owning it.

Confidence does not seek validation, it does not seek to turn heads or demand recognition, confidence is internal and is based completely on how you perceive yourself and your capabilities.

Every individual has strengths and weaknesses that constitute to making us who we are, as we navigate our daily lives, we must remember to lean into our strengths and abilities, this is where our confidence is rooted.

We are often conditioned to think that we can only be certain and sure of ourselves if we are afforded certain traits and advantages, no two people are the same, imagine comparing yourself to another when you have completely different capabilities? Catch my drift?

Innately, each of us possesses gifts, skills and qualities, we have enough within us to validate ourselves and be self assured. Never let society dictate the way you should perceive yourself, you hold a myriad of complexities within you, these give you your identity. Hold on to this, and learn to celebrate the things that make you unique, everyone has the right and the power to be confident and the capacity to assure ourselves from within.

A few quotes that help me get by are;

  1. You are a rockstar. Treat yourself accordingly.” —Hannah Corbin
  2. “Don’t be defined by other people’s expectations. Define your own strengths.” —Susie Chan
  3. “If we all did the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.” —Thomas Edison
  4. “What you have to give, the world needs.” —Aditi Shah

The only opinion that matters regarding you, is the one you think of yourself, your confidence is simply the ability to be sure of yourself and the gifts you possess, meaning that as long as you are living each day you definitely have something to be confident in, never forget that.
